Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Friday, January 22, 2010

It was a packed Rex Pyles Arena as the much awaited matchup of Alderson-Broaddus and #21 West Virginia State was upon the A-B faithful. What a show they would get as A-B jumped out to a early lead and held off the high powered offensive attack of State in the second half to give the Jackets their first conference loss of the season.
Regining WVIAC player of the week Jamar Board got things started as he hit a three in the first 30 seconds to give A-B the first lead of the game. The rest of the half would be controlled by the Battlers. At half A-B was up very comfortably, in what was a shock to most in attendance, by a score of 41-22. The largest lead in the first half would come at the 2:22 mark as A-B found themselves on top by 21.
A-B held the explosive Yellow Jackets to a less than stellar 8-29 shooting from the floor for 27.6 percent. A-B hit 14-33 from the floor including 6-15 from deep in the opening half. In the second half things would get much more interesting.
The first seven minutes of second half action would result in about the same fashion as the first twenty minutes as State couldn't get the A-B lead below 14 points. Than at the 13:09 mark State went on a 8-0 spurt over the next couple minute offs six free throws from Bo King hit a and Darren Jones. Than Justin Banks hit a layup to cap off the run as State got the lead under ten points at 52-43.
State would keep chipping away at the lead and they would finally take the lead with 7:59 left as Cookie Miller hit a layup to give State a 59-58 lead. The Yellow Jackets would push their lead up to as many as three but it would be short lived as A-B would take back the lead at 5:48 and wouldn't let it go as A-B outlasted State to make the final score 84-79.
All five Battler starters reached double digits led by Board's 25. Junior Carl Buck recorded his first 20 point game in a Battler uniform as he ended up with 21. Both Terell Eargle and Garret Putnam recorded double doubles as Eargle tallied 11 points to go along 13 rebounds. Putnam also had 11 points to go along with his 10 boards. Eargle would also lead the team in assists with six.
State was led in scoring by Bo King as he had 19 off the bench. The high powered duo of Miller and Jones was held to 9-27 from the floor combined as they both ended up with a below average 15 points.
A-B will take its eleven game winning streak on the road to Seton Hill on Saturday Jan. 23. You can tune in on 91.3FM WQAB and also listen to game online at www.ab.edu/gameday.
