A-B Gets 14th Consecutive Victory As They Spoil Glenville's Upset Bid

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Friday, January 29, 2010

Alderson-Broaddus survived a scare from the visiting Pioneers of Glenville State Thursday night as A-B pulled out a close 74-69 victory.
The first half would be a sluggish one for the Battlers as they shot only 13-37 from the field for a less than impressive 35 percent but it was Mark Summerfield the junior guard out of Moatsville,WV that would keep the Battlers in it as he 14 first half points and he connected on 4-6 from deep.  Glenville's defense kept A-B leading scorer Jamar Board silent as he went 2-7 from the field for five points in the opening stanza.
The half would go back and forth as both teams would exchange the lead none getting any higher than seven. It was only appropriate that the score would be tied up at intermission 34-34. Aaron Dobson led the way for the Pioneers as he had 12 points in the first twenty minutes of action.
The second half would be close just like the first but A-B overcame their sluggish night as they stayed in control and answered several runs by Glenville as they maintained a single digit lead. However Glenville was never out of this until the final seconds as A-B had to use clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to seal up this one by a final score of 74-69.
A-B had a balanced attack as four of five starters finished with double digits. Summerfield and Carl Buck led the way as they each tallied 19 points. Board would finish with 13 and Senior Terell Eargle had a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Marcus Catney would have 19 for the Pioneers who dropped to 5-11 overall and 4-7 in conference. Freshman Jonathan Bevins would also get a double double on the evening as he finished with 15 points and 12 boards.
With the victory A-B improves to 14-2 overall and 10-1 in conference play. They will host the Falcons on Saturday evening in what is going to be a critical WVIAC battle. Fairmont comes in with a 9-2 conference record and with a victory A-B could leap frog West Liberty State and West Virginia State for first place in the standings. The game will be available on this website and also available on 91.3 WQAB. Read more on this article...

A-B Women Outlast Explosive Glenville

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on

Head coach Josh Allen always knew what his team was capable of this year and in recent action against Glenville State those in attendance also saw it as the Lady Battlers took down conference foe Glenville State 88-82.
The first half would go both ways as A-B did all they could in slowing down a Glenville offense that averages nearly 90 possessions a game. Glenville jumped out to a early lead as they went up by as many as 10 at the 16:36 mark. However the Lady Battlers used a great press breaking offense which gave them a lot of open looks and on more times than not they connected as it led them back into the game.
A-B would get their first lead of the half late and they pushed it up to as many as seven with only 20 seconds left but Glenville would close on a explosive 8-0 run to give them the lead back at the half 45-44.
Both Amanda Peoples and Tori Charley led the Lady Battlers in scoring with ten a piece in the opening half. Donita Adams, the Lady Pioneers leading scorer, had 14 at intermission to lead all scorers. A-B shot a blistering 57 percent from the floor to Glenville's 40. However A-B could only connect on 1-11 from deep as Glenville hit five treys.
The second half would begin in Glenville's favor and they would hold the lead for a majority of the half as they had a balanced attack from Adams, Autumn Davis, and post player Kristen Golden to maintain their lead. It would not be enough though to hold off a determined Lady Battlers team that was thirsty for a huge and much needed conference win.
Peoples and Charley would continue to have an impact on the game but Lauren Reed would have 13 second half points to give A-B the lead back late. Reed would go on and hit a crucial three with less than a second on the shot clock in the closing minutes to give A-B a two possession lead at four.
The Lady Battlers would hold off Glenville by a final score of 88-82, giving A-B consecutive victories after dropping their previous four. It boosted their record to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in conference. Glenville who came into the game ranked in the top five of conference standings dropped to 9-6 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
A-B would be led scoring by People as she had 19 points but it was Charley who earned a double double as she finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Reed finished with 13 and Amanda Harris tallied 10 points and had eight assists as she is still top ten in the nation in assists per game.
The Lady Battlers return to action Saturday as they take on the conference leading Lady Falcons of Fairmont State. Tipoff is at 5:15 pm at Rex Pyles Arena and you can tune in and watch the game with the WQAB 91.3FM broadcast at this website as Tony Lane and Nick Dials will be courtside brigning you the action. 1-28-10 WVIAC MBB Preview

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Thursday, January 28, 2010

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---Thursday's WVIAC men's basketball action has the league's eight squads with .500 or better marks in conference play facing their counterparts with losing marks.
The feature matchup on Thursday's slate has resurgent Pitt Johnstown (8-7, 4-6), winners of three straight, at regionally-ranked Fairmont State (13-2, 8-2).
The youthful Mountain Cats have won consecutive contests versus Shepherd, Ohio Valley, and West Virginia Wesleyan. Head coach Bob Rukavina's squad leads the WVIAC in field goal accuracy at 52.8 percent.
Guard Danny Branch tops UPJ in scoring at 16.1 points per contest. Center Patrick Grubbs, who missed Saturday's win over WV Wesleyan with a sore ankle, chips in 15.9 points and 8.9 rebounds for the Mountain Cats.
Fairmont State, which is ranked No. 10 in the first NCAA Division II regional rankings of the season, hopes to bounce back from Saturday's three-point loss to Davis & Elkins in which the Falcons were limited to a season-low 68 points.
Steve Custis paces the Falcon attack with 17.1 points per game. Isaac Thornton adds 14.7 points, while Terrence Green provides 13.6 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game. FSU could be playing their first full contest without the services of starting point guard Erv McFadden, who was injured in the Davis & Elkins loss.
The teams split two meetings last season. UPJ won 78-61 in Johnstown behind Grubbs' 19 points and 10 rebounds. FSU won the return match in Joe Retton Arena 93-85 as All-American guard Thad McFadden exploded for 37 points and 8 assists.
First place West Virginia State (13-2, 9-1) has trailed by double-digit margins at the half in their past two contests. The Yellow Jackets, who are ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic Region, will look for a quicker start at Bluefield State (3-12, 3-7).
West Liberty is the WVIAC's highest ranked squad in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings at No. 2. The Toppers (13-1, 9-1) hit the road at Ohio Valley (3-12, 2-8).
Glenville State (5-10, 4-6) head coach Stephen Dye will try to spring the upset on his college coach when the Pioneers pay a visit to Alderson-Broaddus (13-2, 9-1). Greg Zimmerman's A-B squad has won 13 straight and is the sixth-ranked squad in the regional rankings.
Local bragging rights are at stake when West Virginia Wesleyan (2-13, 2-8) travels to Davis & Elkins (8-6, 6-4) for a neighborhood battle. The remainder of Thursday's schedule sees Wheeling Jesuit (9-6, 6-4) at Salem International (1-15, 1-9), Charleston (8-6, 7-3) at Concord (3-12, 2-8), and Shepherd (3-12, 3-7) at Seton Hill (7-8, 5-5).

1-28-10 WVIAC WBB Preview

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on

PRINCETON, W.Va.)---The unsettled WVIAC women's basketball race figures to take more twists and turns with four key showdowns on Thursday night's schedule.

Shepherd (9-6, 8-2) takes their newly-minted first place status in the league standings to Seton Hill (9-6, 5-5).  Second place Fairmont State (11-4, 8-2) will be tested by visiting Pitt Johnstown (9-6, 6-4).  Charleston (11-5, 8-3) travels to slumping Concord (10-6, 7-4) and West Virginia Wesleyan (8-7, 6-4) heads to Davis & Elkins (9-6, 5-5) in a neighborhood rivalry.

Shepherd has taken six straight after racing past Glenville State 116-94 on Saturday.  The balanced Ram attack is paced by Camille Wilmer's 14.2 points per game.  Carrie Saunders chips in 12.8 points per outing.  SU is outrebounding opponents by over ten boards per game.

Seton Hill has dropped five of six contests since an 8-1 start.  Katie Lintner tops the Griffin stat chart with 14.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.  Jordan Burkes adds 10.7 points per game.  The Griffins are only 3-4 on their home court in 2009-10.

Charleston and Concord represent teams that are heading in different directions.  Visiting Charleston has taken nine of ten, while injury-riddled Concord is 4-6 in the second semester.

UC, which is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, sees all five starters average double figures in points.  Lindsey Kentner racks up 17.2 points per game, while Kaitlyn Arick adds 14.1.  Center Tarenna Dixon contributes a double-double of 13.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.  The Golden Eagles are 9-1 at Eddie King Gymnasium, but only 1-4 in true road contests.

Concord has ranked among the nation's top defensive field goal units all season, allowing foes to only make 34.1 percent of their shots from the field.  However, turnovers have been an achilles heel for the Lady Lions.  CU is averaging over 18 miscues per night and opponents have attempted 92 more field goal attempts than the Lady Lions in 2009-10.  Sisters Sierra (14.1 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Jolysa (13.4 ppg, 9.3 rpg) Brown lead Concord in scoring.

Fairmont State, winners of three straight after edging Davis & Elkins 75-69 in overtime on Saturday, has another tough contest on tap when Pitt Johnstown comes to Joe Retton Arena.  FSU's sticky defense is forcing nearly 25 turnovers per contest and is limiting foes to 58.6 points per game.  Senior guard Ashley Vavrek paces the Falcon attack with 19.4 points per game.

Pitt Johnstown also ranks among the WVIAC's best on defense, holding opponents to 61.7 points per contest.  The Lady Cats get 14.6 points and 5.2 rebounds from guard Sheena Aden.  Andrea Dalton adds 13.6 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game.

Davis & Elkins looks to make some noise in a rivalry dominated in recent years by West Virginia Wesleyan.  WVWC has won the last eight in the series since D&E claimed a 78-71 home victory on January 16, 2006.

This season's D&E squad is led by the guard trio of Shalisa Hill (14.6 ppg), Lindsay Holliday (11.3 ppg), and Teonna Jewell (10.1 ppg).  Hill also leads the Senators in rebounding (5.6 rpg), assists (3.7 apg), and steals (3.6 spg).

Wesleyan has fashioned an 8-7 mark against one of the toughest schedules in Division II.  13 of the Bobcats' 15 opponents own winning records to date.  Lydia Bridenbaugh pours in 18.5 points per game to top WVWC.  Danae Hill adds 13.1 points per night.

West Liberty (10-5, 6-4), the fourth-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, treks down I-77 to Ohio Valley (4-10, 2-8).  Run-and-gun Glenville State (9-5, 7-3) is ranked sixth in the initial regional rankings.  The Lady Pioneers put that spot on the line at Alderson-Broaddus (5-10, 3-7).

The night's schedule is rounded out by Wheeling Jesuit (6-9, 5-5) at Salem International (0-15, 0-10) and Bluefield State (1-16, 1-11) at West Virginia State (10-7, 6-6).

1-25-10 WVIAC MBB Preview

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---Only a pair of WVIAC men's basketball contests are slated for a rare slow Monday evening. Alderson-Broaddus (12-2, 8-1) takes their 12-game win streak to Bluefield State (3-11, 3-6), while Davis & Elkins (7-6) steps out of conference play to host Lake Erie (6-14). Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts.

A-B has not lost since a 76-72 setback to Charleston on November 28. The Battlers improved to 8-1 in WVIAC play with an impressive 81-61 road win at Seton Hill on Saturday evening. Sophomore Jamar Board ranks second in the WVIAC in scoring at 21.4 points per game. WVIAC Player of the Year contender Terrell Eargle leads the league with 11.3 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game. He also ranks among the conference leaders with 15.9 points and 4.3 assists per outing. Junior forward Carl Buck has scored in double figures during his last four games.

Bluefield State was limited to a season-low 39 points in a 29-point loss at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday. David Noel (16.4 ppg) and Rico Thompson (15.4 ppg) are the leaders for the Big Blues. BSC has won their past two home WVIAC contests with victories against Salem International and Concord.

Davis & Elkins picked up a huge win on Saturday as the Senators ended Fairmont State's nine-game win streak in a 71-68 triumph. Revenge will be on the mind of Bruce Martin's club on Monday evening when Lake Erie comes to town.

The Senators had one of their poorest shooting efforts of the season in the January 4 loss to Lake Erie, making only 35.4 percent of their field goal tries during the 88-62 setback. Lake Erie also owned a 53-27 rebounding edge. Read more on this article...

1-25-10 WVIAC WBB Preview

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---A pair of contests featuring teams with winning records are the feature attractions on Monday's WVIAC women's basketball schedule. West Virginia Wesleyan (9-6, 6-3) travels to Pitt Johnstown (8-6, 5-4) in a 5:30 p.m. start, while West Virginia State (9-7, 5-6) hosts Concord (10-5, 7-3) at 7:00 p.m.

Wesleyan brings a four-game win streak to the UPJ Sports Center that includes a trio of victories by five points or fewer. The Bobcats are battle-tested by a schedule that has seen 12 of 14 opponents to date own winning records. Sophomore guard Lydia Bridenbaugh leads WVWC with 18.5 points per game, while Danae Hill adds 13.4 points per contest. Senior center Angela Tassari is second in the WVIAC with 34 blocked shots.

Pitt Johnstown has alternated wins and losses in their last six outings. The Lady Cats are paced in scoring by Sheena Aden's 14.2 points per game. The junior guard also leads her team with 50 assists and 39 steals. Andrea Dalton chips in 13.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for UPJ.

Concord and West Virginia State are playing a makeup game of a contest that was snowed out last month. WVSU used a late rush to bounce Ohio Valley 74-52 on Saturday, while Concord dropped a heartbreaking 67-65 decision at West Liberty.

State has won three of four and is led in scoring by Marshall transfer Alixandria Barnette's 16.7 points per game. Tonesha Members (11.7 ppg) and Danielle Davis (11.6 ppg) each score in double figures for the Jackets.

Sierra Brown tops the CU scoring column with 14.1 points per game. Jolysa Brown tallies 13.5 points and grabs a team-leading 9.0 rebounds per outing. Youngstown State transfer Camisha Alexander scores at a 10.4 points per game clip and registered a season-high 21 points Saturday at West Liberty.

The only other Monday night league affair pits Alderson-Broaddus (4-10, 2-7) versus homestanding Bluefield State (1-15, 1-10). Non-conference contests see Washington Adventist (0-16) visiting Davis & Elkins (8-6) and Ohio Valley (4-9) takes a trip to Urbana (11-8).

The lone Tuesday contest should be a good one as Seton Hill (9-5) hosts a solid Lake Erie (14-8) squad. Lake Erie owns a six-game win streak and has victories this season versus Grand Valley State, Fairmont State, and Concord. Read more on this article...

A-B Keeps Rolling, Extends Win Streak To Twelve

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Sunday, January 24, 2010

The Alderson-Broaddus men's basketball team kept its win streak alive Saturday night as they took down the Griffins of Seton Hill University 81-61.
A-B took the lead nearly five minutes into the game on a Jamar Board three. They would never give lead back to the Griffins in this one. After taking the lead A-B went on a 13-5 run over a five minute span to push their out to nine with 10:30 left in the opening half.
The Battlers would get their largest lead of the half as Mile Ivanic would block a shot with nine seconds left and Jamar Board would hit a three as time expired as A-B went into the locker room with a 41-25 advantage.
Board would connect on 4-6 from deep in the half and would lead all scorers with 14 points. Senior Terrell Eargle was well on pace for yet another double as he had 10 points and eight rebounds.
A-B shot a very impressive 50 percent from the floor in the first half and held the Griffins to 35 percent. The Battlers also held a dominant hand in rebounding as they posted a 23-12 advantage.
The second half of action went back and forth in the beginning but eventually A-B would pull away. The largest lead for the Battlers was with 6:48 left when Carl Buck connected on a layup to give A-B a comfortable 73-47 lead. This capped off a 10-2 Battler run which sealed the victory over the Griffins. A-B would then coast to a crucial road victory by a final score of 81-61.

It was a tale of two halfs for the Lady Battlers at Seton Hill Saturday as their recent skid continued.
Seton Hill started out the game on a 13-4 run as it was capped by on a layup by Jill Emberg at the 14:29 mark. A-B's early struggles would stay with them the rest of the half as the Lady Grif's would extend their lead up to as many as 18 with just under a minute left in the first stanza.
However the half would end on a positive note for A-B as Britni Shriver stole the ball with five seconds left and Tori Charley would hit a jumper in the closing seconds to make the score at half 45-29.
The Lady Battlers shot 38 percent from the field in the first half compared to the blistering 60 percent for Seton Hill.
In the second half of play Seton Hill would get their largest lead of the game at 18:12 as they went up by 19. Than things would slowly start turning for A-B's offense as they went on a explosive 10-0 run over the next two minutes to make the score, a much more manageable one at 50-41. The beginning and end of the run would be a Amanda Peoples three pointer as she would end the game with a double a double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
A-B would get the Seton Hill's lead down to as few as six with 8:19 left on a layup by Senior Lauren Reed. But A-B then went cold on the offensive end as they did not score again over a near four minute span until Ashley Prince split a pair of free throws. The Lady Battlers would connect on a field goal until Senior Tori Charley connected on a layup with 1:39 left. Reed would score off a Charley steal with 1:01 on the clock to cut the lead of Seton Hill down to 66-60.
Seton Hill would split a pair of free throws off their ensueing possession and gave A-B the ball back with just over thirty seconds left. A-B than turned the ball over back to Seton Hill off their next possession and that spoiled the comeback bid for the Lady Battlers as Seton Hill pushed the lead back out to nine. The final in this hard fought game would end at 72-63.
Charley had a solid effort for A-B as she poured in 18 points and pulled down six rebounds. Seton Hill was led in scoring by Emberg as she scored a game high 23 and pulled down a team high seven boards.
A-B drops to 2-7 in conference play and 4-10 overall. The Lady Grif's improved to 9-5 overall and 5-5 overall. On Monday A-B makes the long trek down to Bluefield State. The game will be on 91.3FM WQAB and online at www.ab.edu/gameday Read more on this article...

Men Take Down #21 West Virginia State With Balanced Attack

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Friday, January 22, 2010

It was a packed Rex Pyles Arena as the much awaited matchup of Alderson-Broaddus and #21 West Virginia State was upon the A-B faithful. What a show they would get as A-B jumped out to a early lead and held off the high powered offensive attack of State in the second half to give the Jackets their first conference loss of the season.
Regining WVIAC player of the week Jamar Board got things started as he hit a three in the first 30 seconds to give A-B the first lead of the game. The rest of the half would be controlled by the Battlers. At half A-B was up very comfortably, in what was a shock to most in attendance, by a score of 41-22. The largest lead in the first half would come at the 2:22 mark as A-B found themselves on top by 21.
A-B held the explosive Yellow Jackets to a less than stellar 8-29 shooting from the floor for 27.6 percent. A-B hit 14-33 from the floor including 6-15 from deep in the opening half. In the second half things would get much more interesting.
The first seven minutes of second half action would result in about the same fashion as the first twenty minutes as State couldn't get the A-B lead below 14 points. Than at the 13:09 mark State went on a 8-0 spurt over the next couple minute offs six free throws from Bo King hit a and Darren Jones. Than Justin Banks hit a layup to cap off the run as State got the lead under ten points at 52-43.
State would keep chipping away at the lead and they would finally take the lead with 7:59 left as Cookie Miller hit a layup to give State a 59-58 lead. The Yellow Jackets would push their lead up to as many as three but it would be short lived as A-B would take back the lead at 5:48 and wouldn't let it go as A-B outlasted State to make the final score 84-79.
All five Battler starters reached double digits led by Board's 25. Junior Carl Buck recorded his first 20 point game in a Battler uniform as he ended up with 21. Both Terell Eargle and Garret Putnam recorded double doubles as Eargle tallied 11 points to go along 13 rebounds. Putnam also had 11 points to go along with his 10 boards. Eargle would also lead the team in assists with six.
State was led in scoring by Bo King as he had 19 off the bench. The high powered duo of Miller and Jones was held to 9-27 from the floor combined as they both ended up with a below average 15 points.
A-B will take its eleven game winning streak on the road to Seton Hill on Saturday Jan. 23. You can tune in on 91.3FM WQAB and also listen to game online at www.ab.edu/gameday. Read more on this article...

A-B led most of the game but a late second half spurt by West Virginia State allowed the Lady Jackets to walk out of Rex Pyles with a victory.
The first half of action was controlled mainly by the Lady Battlers as they turned up the defense and shut out the Lady Jackets from three point range. WV State would take the lead under a minute to go but Freshman Amanda Peoples countered with a three pointer to give A-B the lead back just before half and as the buzzer sounded A-B found themselves ahead by a score of 22-21.
As the Lady Battlers took the floor for the second stanze they picked up right where Peoples left off as they pushed their lead up to as many as 10 at the 14:31 mark. Than as soon as it started to look like A-B would pull away from West Virginia State the Lady Jackets forced several A-B turnovers over their next few possessions and worked their way right back into the game.
A-B was outscored by the Lady Jackets by 27 over the final 14:31 to make the final score 66-49. The loss would drop A-B to 2-6 in conference and 4-9 overall. A-B would be led in scoring by Peoples with 14 points. Senior Lauren Reed would be the only other scorer in double figures as she chipped in ten. Tori Charley would lead in rebounding as she pulled down a game high 11 boards. Amanda Harris continues to prove that she is worthy of being top ten in the nation in assists as she had 10 dimes for the game.
The Lady Battlers will go up to Seton Hill on Saturday. The game will tipoff at 5:15. Read more on this article...

Eargle Nearly Gets Quadruple Double Leads A-B Over D&E

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Monday, January 18, 2010

Terrell Eargle nearly accomplished what many people call nearly impossible in a win over nearby rival Davis & Elkins College on Monday night.
In the first half of action A-B jumped out immediately to a 17-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game as A-B looked like they were going to run away with this one early. However the Senators showed why they are one of the most improved teams in the conference this season and came storming back into this one.  As it would turn out D&E would do more than just keep it close. They not only stepped up their offense play but defensive as well as they held A-B scoreless from the field over the final 4:30 in the first half of action. At half A-B found themselves down by a score of 35-29.
Eargle at the break was already well on his way to a historic performance. At half he had seven points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals. He was far from being done in this one. Carl Buck led the Battlers in scoring in the first stanza as he had nine points. For the Senators they were paced in scoring by guard PJ Turner as he had ten.
The second half would be more exciting than the first for the packed Rex Pyles crowd as both teams continued to battle for the victory. The D&E faithful did all they could to make sure that their 20 game losing streak to the Battlers came to an end.  The Senators pushed their lead to as many as seven at the 17:57 mark but then A-B, led by Eargle, stormed back into the picture and got the ball rolling for A-B who had a off night from leading scorer, Jamar Board who would finish with 13.
A-B would get the lead back late in the half but would have to overcome more than one scare from the Senators who had two chances to either take the lead or tie things up in the final minute but Board came through with two free throws in the final ten seconds to give A-B a 66-62 lead and that would be the final in this one.
Eargle for the game had once again a performance that may not be forgotten for quite some time. The following statline has no typos as Eargle scored 16 points, 20 rebounds, 8 assists, and 8 steals as he nearly earned a quadruple double on the night. All five Battler starters scored double digit points in a balanced attack.
A-B now has a ten game win streak that they will defend at home on Thursday as #25 West Virginia State makes the trek to Philippi in what will more than likely the biggest home game on the season for the Battlers. The game will be available on the blog site as well as 91.3 WQAB and also at www.ab.edu/gameday. The game starts at 7:30. Read more on this article...

The Alderson-Broaddus women's basketball team brought 110 percent effort but it wasn't enough as the Lady Battlers dropped their third consecutive game to Davis & Elkins College.
In the first half of action A-B was the team to jump out to an early lead and went up by as many as four in the opening minutes but it would be short lived as D&E forced 20 first half turnovers as they only committed eight. D&E took advantage of the turnovers as they scored 22 points in the first half. The Lady Senators stayed committed to getting it down low to Shalisa Hill. Hill tallied 11 first half points to lead all scorers and helped win the battle of the paint 20-8. At halftime A-B found themselves down 36-26, well within striking range for the second half.
Just like in the previous two games past as soon as A-B would get the momentum D&E would respond with big shots to maintain their lead around twn points. The game never got out of control for A-B as their largest deficit came with 50 seconds left in the game as D&E went up 73-58 and that would be the final score.
A-B was lead in scoring by seniors Tori Charley and Amanda Harris with 12 points apiece. Charley also pulled down nine rebounds and had a team high four steals for the Lady Battlers.
For D&E they were lead in scoring by Hill with 19 points. Also in double digits for the Lady Senators was Teonna  Jewell with 13 and Natasa Pupic chipped in 10 respecitively.
After the loss A-B dropped to 4-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Their next game will be at home on Thursday against conference rival West Virginia State University. The last time these two teams met up was in the first round of the WVIAC conference tourney as State bumped off the Battlers at West Virginia State. Read more on this article...

Crosstown Rivalries Take Center Stage On 1/18 WVIAC Men's Basketball Schedule
1/18/2010

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---A pair of crosstown rivalries take center stage on the January 18 WVIAC men's basketball schedule as Charleston hosts West Virginia State and West Liberty welcomes Wheeling Jesuit.

No. 25 West Virginia State has won 24 straight WVIAC regular season contests and leads this season's league race with a 7-0 mark.  The 11-1 Jackets have taken their last seven contests since falling to Barry (FL) on November 28.  Guards Darren Jones (22.0 ppg) and Cookie Miller (19.5 ppg) lead the WVSU attack.  Forward Fred Harris has swatted away a WVIAC-best 56 shots and also paces State with 7.5 rebounds per game.

Charleston (6-5, 5-2) has dropped league contests to West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit in recent days after jumping out a 5-0 WVIAC start.  The Golden Eagles need to protect their home court at Eddie King Gym to avoid facing a three-game deficit in the conference standings.  Five UC players average scoring in double figures, including forward John White.  The senior captain contributes 11.5 points and a WVIAC-best 11.3 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles.

State won both 2008-09 matchups in blowout fashion.  Jones had 24 points in a 105-70 home win at Fleming Hall.  WVSU then rolled to a 50-24 halftime lead before coasting to an 84-66 victory in the regular season finale at UC.

West Liberty (10-1, 6-1) goes for their second victory of the season against Northern Panhandle rival Wheeling Jesuit (8-4, 5-2).  The Toppers pulled away from a 42-39 advantage after one half to down the Cardinals 90-69 in a non-league affair on November 21.  Corey Pelle contributed 18 opints and six assists for WL.  The Topper defense limited WJU to 34.8 percent shooting from the field and forced 29 turnovers.  Andre Harris had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cards.

Head coach Jim Crutchfield's West Liberty squad has gone over the 100-point mark in six of seven WVIAC contests and averages 108.3 points in league games.  Pelle (19.7 ppg, 6.3 apg) and Mike Mathey (16.4 ppg, 5.7 apg) spark the up-tempo Topper attack.

Wheeling Jesuit earned an impressive 80-78 road win at Charleston on Saturday when Brenden Bazillio tossed in the game winner with six seconds left in the cotnest.  Sophomore forward Steve Catich leads WJU in scoring with 14.7 points per game.  Obi Ukwuoma adds 11.3 points and a team-best 7.1 rebounds each outing.

Ancient rivals Alderson-Broaddus (9-2, 5-1) and Davis & Elkins (6-4, 5-2) clash at Rex Pyles Arena.  The Battlers have dominated the series with 20 consecutive victories over the Senators since Rolondo Hall's 20 points and 10 rebounds led D&E to a 79-52 win on February 11, 1999.

D&E is on a three-game win streak following Saturday's 87-81 win at Shepherd.  The Senators are led by in scoring by Tim Turner's 19.6 points per game.  P.J. Turner provides 14.1 points and a WVIAC-leading 9.6 assists per contest.

Alderson-Broaddus has ripped off nine victories since starting 0-2.  Jamar Board has scored 20 or more points in each of the past six outings and tops the A-B scoring chart with 21.5 points per game.  Senior Terrell Eargle provides 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists each night.

Fairmont State (11-1, 6-1) puts their seven-game win streak on the line at Seton Hill (7-5, 5-2).  The Falcons have averaged a winning margin of 24.4 points per game during the hot stretch and no contest has been closer than 14 points.  Steve Custis' 18.8 points per game is best among four Falcons that average scoring in double figures.  Terrence Green adds 13.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Seton Hill saw a modest three-game win streak end in a 78-69 upset loss at Glenville State on Saturday night.  Guard Chris Giles is third in the WVIAC with 20.9 points per game.  Cody Boone provides an inside presence with 10.0 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per contest.

Concord (3-9, 2-5) looks for their second win of the year against cross-county foe Bluefield State (2-9, 2-4).  The Mountain Lions shot a season-best 57.1 percent from the field in a non-conference 89-58 dismantling of the homestanding Big Blues on November 27.

Pitt Johnstown (5-7, 1-6) hosts Shepherd (1-11, 1-6) and Salem International (0-13, 0-7) welcomes Ohio Valley (3-9, 2-5) in the other WVIAC contests on Monday night's docket.

FSU-SHU, SU-UPJ, WL-WJU Clashes Highlight 1/18 WVIAC Women's Basketball Schedule
1/18/2010

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---Ten of the WVIAC's sixteen women's basketball squads are within two games of the conference lead as the league race rolls toward the halfway mark.  Monday's slate is highlighted by clashes among contenders when Fairmont State travels to Seton Hill and Pitt Johnstown hosts Shepherd.  Another big contest takes place at West Liberty as the Lady Toppers try to climb back into crowded fray near the top of the league schedule as Wheeling Jesuit makes the short trek up Route 88.

Fairmont State (8-4, 5-2) and Seton Hill (8-3, 4-3) look to bounce back from disappointing losses on Saturday when they meet at Salvitti Gymnasium in Greensburg.  FSU saw a double-digit second half lead melt away in a 65-64 setback at West Virginia Wesleyan, while Seton Hill was outgunned 105-93 at Glenville State.

Both squads rank among the WVIAC's leaders in scoring defense.  Fairmont State allows a league-low 58.6 points per outing, while Seton Hill ranks third at 61.5 points given up per outing.  Each also boasts a senior that leads their team in scoring.  FSU guard Ashley Vavrek tosses in 19.7 points per game for the Falcons, while forward Kaite Lintner tops SHU's Griffins with 17.3 poins per outing.

Shepherd (6-5, 5-2) has won three straight contests to vault into third place in the WVIAC standings, but the Rams have a tough assignment on Monday at Pitt Johnstown (7-5, 4-3).

Shepherd is one of the league's top rebounding teams at plus-7.1 boards each game.  Camille Wilmer leads the Rams with 14.6 points per outing.  Jenn Prine tossed in 23 points in Saturday's 84-76 win over Davis & Elkins.

Pitt Johnstown owns a 5-2 mark at home after coming from behind to down Alderson-Broaddus 75-61 on Saturday.  Monae Baker (14.0 ppg), Sheena Aden (13.4 ppg), and Andrea Dalton shoulder much of the scoring load for the Lady Cats.

West Liberty (7-5, 3-4) can boost their WVIAC record back to the .500 mark after an 0-3 start in league action.  Junior Tori Hansen scored 30 points in Saturday's 84-75 win at West Virginia State and is tied for the league lead in scoring at 21.3 points per game.  She also leads her team with 7.3 rebounds per game.

Wheeling Jesuit (5-7, 4-3) has dropped six of seven since jumping out to a 4-1 takeoff.  Kourtney Booth (17.3 ppg) and Cassy Sanderson (14.0 ppg) are the Cardinals' double-digit scorers.

Davis & Elkins (7-4, 4-3) makes the short trip to Alderson-Broaddus (4-7, 2-4).  First place Concord (9-3, 6-1) squares off with Mercer County counterpart Bluefield State (1-12, 1-7).  Ohio Valley's (3-7, 1-6) excursion to Salem International (0-12, 0-7) completes Monday night's action.
