AB Women's Soccer Beats Rio Grande, Falls to Seton Hill

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Tuesday, October 6, 2009

The Alderson-Broaddus women’s soccer team split a pair of contests last week as they kicked off a three-game road trip. On September 30, the Lady Battlers used a late-game goal to get past the University of Rio Grande 2-1. Four days later, A-B would have to battle through over 100 minutes of action before dropping a 1-0 decision to conference foe, Seton Hill University.

The contest against Rio Grande saw both teams fail to find the back of the net during the first half of play. However, in the 67th minute, A-B’s Gwen Brand headed on a pass to Amber Kling, who then scored to give the Lady Battlers the lead. Kasie Shoemaker also accounted for an assist on the play. In the 80th minute, the Red Storm evened the contest when Jessica Preston took a Mallarie Lewis pass and found the upper corner. Just two minutes later, though, Brooke Logston would prevent the game from going into overtime when she scored on a rebound off of a Jenny Perry shot.

The Lady Battlers dominated in every aspect of the game, taking 19 shots compared to five by the Red Storm. A-B also held a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Keeper Kate Laird had three saves, while her counterpart Kaitlyn Schultz recorded ten.

Against the Griffins, the Lady Battlers looked to pick up their second conference win. The contest would prove to be a defensive battle as neither team would manage to score during regulation. The scoreboard would still read 0-0 after an additional period, which would force a decisive second overtime. Just over two minutes in, Seton Hill’s Mackiesh Taylor would score an unassisted goal to give the Griffins the sudden death victory.
A-B had a 17-12 advantage in shots, while Seton Hill had three corner kicks compared to the Lady Battlers’ one. Laird had 7 saves while Jenna Forsano had 11 for the Griffins.
The Lady Battlers will have an extensive home-stand, as they host five contests in eleven days. The first is a Homecoming match up against Carlow University on Saturday, October 10 at noon. Salem International University and Bluefield State College will then come to Philippi on October 12, and October 14, respectively. Both WVIAC tilts are scheduled for 3 PM kickoffs.

Men's Soccer Falls to Davis and Elkins

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on

The Alderson-Broaddus men’s soccer team looked for a repeat of last season’s conference semifinal game as the Senators of Davis and Elkins College returned to Philippi in hopes of avenging their 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Battlers last November.

A-B lit up the scoreboard first at the 26:28 mark when junior Michael McDermott netted a pass from sophomore Michael Wright. The Senators would then even the score when Brett Keatley drilled a free kick in the 39th minute. Then, just twelve seconds before the halftime horn, D&E took the lead on a Daniel Kwafo goal. In the second half, the Senators would extend their lead in the 67th minute when Keatley scored another unassisted goal.
The Battlers were outshot 8-12, but only had one fewer shot on goal (5-6) than the Senators. D&E also held a slight 5-2 advantage on corner kicks. Neil Wright-Elliott had three saves for A-B, while his D&E counterpart, Timothy O’Toole had four.
A two-game home stint is in store for the Battlers, who host Salem International University at 3 PM on Wednesday, October 7. They will then entertain Concord University on Saturday, October 10. The Homecoming contest is scheduled for a 2 PM kickoff.

The Lady Battlers dropped a five-game marathon to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania before sweeping WVIAC foes, West Virginia Wesleyan, Bluefield State, and Concord University.

The Lady Battlers opened their home stand with the September 29 contest against IUP, a rematch of a September 5 game in which the Crimson Hawks won in the fifth set, 15-13. A-B captured the first game 25-21, only to fall behind in the match two games to one with 19-25 and 24-26 losses in the second and third sets. The Lady Battlers would rally, however, to eke out game four 25-23 and force a decisive fifth set. Once again, IUP would go the distance, winning the set and the match, 15-8.

Sophomore middle April Lammert also had a solid outing, recording six kills, one solo block and three assisted blocks. In addition, Hadley contributed three service aces and eleven digs.

On October 3, the Lady Battlers hosted a double-header against Bluefield and Concord. Wisbon had 22 assists, while her freshman counterpart Shayna Sweitzer added 15 to the Battler attack. Federoff led the A-B in digs with eleven, despite only appearing in one set. For the contest, the Lady Battlers hit a stellar .327.

Concord University would not put up more than 16 points on the Lady Battlers, as A-B won handily, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-15. Check continued her solid play with ten kills and a .471 average. Martin closed out a spectacular afternoon with nine kills on 13 attempts for a percentage of .692. She had no assists in either contest.
