The Alderson-Broaddus women’s soccer team split a pair of contests last week as they kicked off a three-game road trip. On September 30, the Lady Battlers used a late-game goal to get past the University of Rio Grande 2-1. Four days later, A-B would have to battle through over 100 minutes of action before dropping a 1-0 decision to conference foe, Seton Hill University.

The contest against Rio Grande saw both teams fail to find the back of the net during the first half of play. However, in the 67th minute, A-B’s Gwen Brand headed on a pass to Amber Kling, who then scored to give the Lady Battlers the lead. Kasie Shoemaker also accounted for an assist on the play. In the 80th minute, the Red Storm evened the contest when Jessica Preston took a Mallarie Lewis pass and found the upper corner. Just two minutes later, though, Brooke Logston would prevent the game from going into overtime when she scored on a rebound off of a Jenny Perry shot.

The Lady Battlers dominated in every aspect of the game, taking 19 shots compared to five by the Red Storm. A-B also held a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Keeper Kate Laird had three saves, while her counterpart Kaitlyn Schultz recorded ten.

Against the Griffins, the Lady Battlers looked to pick up their second conference win. The contest would prove to be a defensive battle as neither team would manage to score during regulation. The scoreboard would still read 0-0 after an additional period, which would force a decisive second overtime. Just over two minutes in, Seton Hill’s Mackiesh Taylor would score an unassisted goal to give the Griffins the sudden death victory.
A-B had a 17-12 advantage in shots, while Seton Hill had three corner kicks compared to the Lady Battlers’ one. Laird had 7 saves while Jenna Forsano had 11 for the Griffins.
The Lady Battlers will have an extensive home-stand, as they host five contests in eleven days. The first is a Homecoming match up against Carlow University on Saturday, October 10 at noon. Salem International University and Bluefield State College will then come to Philippi on October 12, and October 14, respectively. Both WVIAC tilts are scheduled for 3 PM kickoffs.
