WVIAC WBB Tournament 1st Round Previews

#15 Bluefield State (1-26, 1-21) at #2 Seton Hill (21-6, 17-5), 7:00 p.m.
Head Coaches: BSC-Gary Brown, SHU-Ferne Labati.
Last Ten Games: BSC 0-10, SHU 10-0.
Key Players: BSC: G-Laken Coburn (10.5 ppg, 2.9 apg), G-Charlene Diggs (10.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg), F-Kelly Pawlowski (9.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg).  SHU: F-Katie Lintner (15.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg), F-Jordan Burkes (14.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.3 apg), G-Orit Farchi (6.7 ppg, 4.1 apg).
Regular Season Meeting: Seton Hill built a 64-28 halftime lead and coasted past Bluefield State 90-45 on January 11...The five Griffin starters only played a combined 51 minutes and the SHU bench scored 60 points in the game...BSC's Laken Coburn tallied a game-high 19 points.
Notes: SHU head coach Ferne Labati reached the 500-win mark earlier this season...The Griffins have won their past 12 and have not lost since January 26...Bluefield State enters on a 14-game losing skid...The Lady Blues are 0-13 away from home this season.

#9 Pitt Johnstown (15-12, 12-10) at #8 Wheeling Jesuit (13-14, 12-10), 7:30 p.m.
Head Coaches: UPJ-Sasha Palmer, WJU-Katie Hine.
Last Ten Games: UPJ 6-4, WJU 5-5
Key Players: UPJ: G-Sheena Aden (14.6 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.9 apg), F-Andrea Dalton (14.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg), G-Qiuana Brown (7.0 ppg, 3.2 apg).  WJU: G-Kourtney Booth (14.7 ppg, 3.1 apg), F-Kim Mueller (9.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg), G-Chrissy Pavlik (11.1 ppg, 3.3 apg).
Regular Season Meetings: Both matchups came down to the final possession as Wheeling Jesuit won at home 68-67 on November 24 behind Kim Mueller's 21 points...Sheena Aden had 23 points and 8 rebounds as UPJ gained revenge with a home 90-87 overtime win on February 13.
Notes: The squads are meeting for the third straight season in the WVIAC Tournament opening round...Wheeling Jesuit won 77-76 in overtime in 2008, while Pitt Johnstown earned a 62-59 victory last season.

#10 Concord (15-12, 12-10) at #7 Shepherd (15-11, 14-8), 7:30 p.m.

Head Coaches: CU-Kenny Osborne, SU-Melanie Ford.
Last Ten Games: CU 5-5, SU 6-4.
Key Players: CU: G-Camisha Alexander (14.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg), C-Jolysa Brown (14.9 ppg, 9.0 rpg), F-Sydney Lindsey (10.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg).  SU: C-Camille Wilmer (14.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg), G-Jerica Hewett (10.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.2 apg), F-Carrie Saunders (12.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg).
Regular Season Meeting: Camisha Alexander's steal and layup in the final seconds lifted visiting Concord to a 94-93 win on February 24...CU's Jolysa Brown led her squad with 29 points and 8 rebounds, while Alexander tallied 21....Camille Wilmer's 19 points led six Shepherd players in double figures.
Notes: Shepherd downed Concord 94-79 in the opening round of last season's WVIAC Tournament...Shepherd is the top rebounding team in the WVIAC at plus-8.8 boards per outing...Concord stands second in the WVIAC at 75.7% from the foul stripe.

#11 West Virginia State (16-11, 12-10) at #6 Fairmont State (18-9, 15-7), 7:30 p.m.
Head Coaches: WVSU-Renee Bostic, FSU-Steve McDonald.
Last Ten Games: WVSU 6-4, FSU 6-4.
Key Players: WVSU: G-Alixandria Barnette (19.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg), G-Danielle Davis (10.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3.4 spg), F-Melissa Ford (10.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg).  FSU: G-Ashley Vavrek (20.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg), G-Kaitlin Snyder (10.6 ppg, 2.9 apg), C-Rachel Murray (9.3 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 3.0 bpg).
Regular Season Meeting: West Virginia State used a 49-36 rebounding edge to claim an 84-76 win at Fairmont State on February 4...Alixandria Barnette led the Jackets with 24 points and 9 rebounds, while Melissa Ford added 20 points and 12 rebounds...Ashley Vavrek paced FSU with 28 points and 3 steals.
Notes: Fairmont State has won their last six first round WVIAC Tournament contests...FSU is 10-4 at home in 2009-10, but lost three of their last four games at Joe Retton Arena...WVSU is 12-1 when allowing 68 or fewer points.

#12 Davis & Elkins (14-13, 10-12) at #5 West Liberty (19-8, 15-7), 7:30 p.m.
Head Coaches: D&E-Jason Asbell, WL-Lynn Ullom.
Last Ten Games: D&E 5-5, WL 7-3.
Key Players: D&E: G-Shalisa Hill (14.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3.6 apg), G-Teonna Jewell (10.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg), F-Julieanne Buckley (9.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg).  WL: G-Tori Hansen (21.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 4.6 apg), G-Laura Malernee (13.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg), G-Jenni Robbins (11.3 ppg, 6.3 apg).
Regular Season Meeting: Shalisa Hill had 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists as Davis & Elkins ran past visiting West Liberty 81-73 on February 8...Julieanne Buckley chipped in 17 points and 8 rebounds for the Senators...Andi Winney topped West Liberty with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Notes: West Liberty has not been eliminated in the WVIAC Tournament first round since an 83-65 loss to Concord in 1992...D&E has lost their past seven openers in the league tournament...The teams rank 2-3 in the WVIAC in made three-pointers per game...D&E makes 9.0 trifectas per game, while WL hits 8.9 per contest.

#13 Alderson-Broaddus (7-20, 5-17) at #4 Glenville State (17-9, 15-7), 7:30 p.m.
Head Coaches: AB-Josh Allen, GSC-Bunky Harkleroad.
Last Ten Games: AB 1-9, GSC 7-3.
Key Players: AB: F-Tori Charley (10.4 ppg, 7.0 rpg), F-Amanda Peoples (9.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg), G-Amanda Harris (6.6 ppg, 5.7 apg).  GSC: G-Donita Adams (22.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg), G-Autumn Davis (13.4 ppg), C-Kristen Golden (11.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg).
Regular Season Meetings: The teams split their two meetings with each winning at home...A-B's Amanda Harris had 10 points, 8 assists, and no turnovers in an 88-82 Battler upset on January 28...Glenville State shot only 27% from the field, but forced 38 turnovers with an 86-68 victory on February 22.
Notes: GSC is a virtual lock to establish a WVIAC single-season scoring record...The Lady Pioneers are averaging 95.7 points per game, a figure well ahead of the current record of 87.4 points per game owned by the 1988-89 Glenville State squad...Glenville State has only attempted fewer than 30 three-point field goals in one game this season.

#14 Ohio Valley (4-23, 2-20) at #3 Charleston (19-8, 16-6), 7:30 p.m.
Head Coaches: OVU-David Wadlington, UC-Sherry Winn.
Last Ten Games: OVU 0-10, UC 7-3.
Key Players: OVU: C-Kendra Benedict (13.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg), G-Denae Beavers (11.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg), G-Danielle Sams (9.6 ppg, 2.7 apg).  UC: G-Lindsey Kentner (17.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg), G-Kaitlyn Arick (14.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg), F-Tarenna Dixon (12.5 ppg, 9.3 rpg).
Regular Season Meeting: Charleston pulled away from a 25-21 halftime lead to down Ohio Valley 62-45 on January 30...Lindsey Kentner's 17 points for UC led all scorers...Tiana Beatty added 11 points and as many rebounds.
Notes: Charleston is attempting to become the first repeat champion in the WVIAC Tournament since Glenville State won the event in 2002 and 2003...OVU owns a 16-game losing streak since downing Salem International on January 18.
