Institute, WV -- The Battlers dropped another tough WVIAC contest on the road last night to rival and perenial power WV State, 81-77. A-B, who lead by as many as 11 in the 2nd half, were unable to get crucial baskets or key defensive stops late in the ball game.
The Battlers had their chances. After a Fred Harris free throw game WV St. the lead, Eargle followed a pair of his own misses to put A-B back up one, 75-74 with 2:37 left to go. Harris wasted no tiem as he came right back with a big dunk to grab a one point lead again for the hosts.
After an A-B timeout, Eargle would connect on a jumper from the elbow to give Coach Zimmerman's squad their last lead at 77-76 with 2:01 remaining. Darren Jones drained a three pointer on State's next possesion making it 79-77. After both teams traded misses, Carl Buck drew a foul driving to the bucket, however he was unable to connect on the front end of the 1&1. Garret Putman grabbed big offensive rebounded as A-B used a timeout to set up their last possession.
After the timeout, Buck would penetrate and kick the ball to Board in the right corner, but his 3 pointer fell short and WV State's Jones would grab the rebound and then ice the contest with two free throws.
Jamar Board led the way for Alderson-Broaddus with 18 points, connected on 4 of 9 from behind the arc. Terrel Eargle filled the box score again with 16 points, 14 rebounds and six assists for the Battlers as they have now dropped 3 of their last 5, falling to 17-5 Overall and 13-4 in the WVIAC. Mark Summerfield and Garret Putman each chipped in 10 points.
Darren Jones atoned for a subpar performance in the first meeting with a game high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Josh "Cookie" Miller and Will Collins added 15 points a piece as the Yellow Jackets improved to 20-3 Overall and 16-2 in the WVIAC.
The Battlers will look to avenge an early season loss this Thursday as they play host to the University of Charleston. Tip off is at 7:30pm.
