Tori Charley Named Honorable Mention All - WVIAC
(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---Glenville State guard Donita Adams, the WVIAC's leading scorer at 22.4 points per game, has been named as the league's 2009-10 Player of the Year by a vote of conference coaches. Davis & Elkins' Shalisa Hill takes Freshman of the Year accolades, while West Virginia Wesleyan's Steve Tierney rounds out the top awards as the WVIAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to the conference's regular season crown.
Adams played a key role as Glenville State remained in contention for the WVIAC regular season title until the final day. The Lady Pioneers finished fourth in the WVIAC with a 15-7 league mark and posted a 17-9 overall record after being forecast to finish 12th in the annual coaches' pre-season poll.
The 5-7 senior guard responded in a big way to first-year head coach Bunky Harkleroad's up-tempo attack by producing over a point per minute. Adams, who currently ranks second nationally in scoring, racked up her impressive totals in only 21.3 minutes per outing. The Germantown, Maryland native contributed four games with 30 or more points in 2009-10 and went over the 20-point mark in 14 other contests. She also leads the WVIAC in free throw percentage (.831) and made free throws (147), while rating eighth in steals (2.1) and 21st in rebounds (6.0).
Hill led Davis & Elkins to the school's most victories since the 2000-01 Senators finished 15-13. The Carney's Point, New Jersey native paced D&E in scoring (14.4), rebounding (5.7), assists (3.6), and steals (3.1). Hill saved some of her top efforts for victories against some of the WVIAC's top squads. She had 18 points and 8 rebounds in an 81-73 win over West Liberty on February 8 and accounted for 22 points and 6 assists as D&E prevailed for the first time ever at Charleston on February 15.
Tierney edged Seton Hill's Ferne Labati, Glenville State's Bunky Harkleroad, and Davis & Elkins' Jason Asbell in a tight finish for WVIAC Coach of the Year honors. The 1987 Sam Houston State graduate owns a 110-89 record in his seventh season at the Wesleyan helm. This season's Bobcats were only predicted to finish sixth in the WVIAC race after the loss of standout forward Sarah Van Horn, but they provided the school's first league regular season title and a 19-8 overall record. A victory in Wednesday's WVIAC Tournament quarterfinals would give WVWC back-to-back 20-win seasons after the 2008-09 'Cats finished at 20-10.
Fairmont State's Ashley Vavrek, Seton Hill's Katie Lintner, and West Liberty's Tori Hansen are repeat selections on this season's first team All-WVIAC squad. Pitt Johnstown's Sheena Aden and Seton Hill's Jordan Burkes move up from the 2008-09 all-conference second team. Adams, Alixandria Barnette (WV State), Lydia Bridenbaugh (WV Wesleyan), and Lindsey Kentner (Charleston) comprise the remainder of the nine-player All-WVIAC first team for 2009-10.

The Lady Battlers would have loved to go into the WVIAC tournament on a winning note but unfortunately for A-B the Lady Senators of Davis & Elkins College got in their way in a close 65-63 D&E victory.
It was a close game from the opening tipoff to the final whistle. It was so close that both teams went an identical 13-25 from the floor for 52 percent. The only difference in the first half in scoring was that the Lady Senators connected on more three pointer and one more free throw attempt as they held a slim 36-34 advantage at intermission.
The second half would result in both teams scoring 29 points as the Lady Battlers could never get the upper hand even after holding D&E to just 33 percent in the second half but the Lady Senators connected on 11 free throws to A-B's four to make the final score a 65-63 Lady Senator victory.
Alderson-Broaddus also held a very dominant hand in the rebounding department by a final margin of 45-27 lead by Freshman Amanda Peoples' 14. The Lady Battlers were paced in scoring by seniors Lauren Reed with 20 and Amanda Harris with 18. Harris lead the Battlers with eight assists on the evening who will open their conference tournament at Glenville State.
The last meeting between the two teams was a thriller as the Lady Battlers walked out of Rex Pyles Arena with the 88-82 upset victory.

Miscues Prove Costly to Lady Battlers as They Fall to Glenville State
Box Score | Season To Date Stats
Glenville, WV -- The key to beating the fast paced Glenville State Women's Basketball team is taking care of the basketball and minimize their number of possesions and shot attempts. These are two things the Alderson-Broaddus Lady Battlers did an excellent job of in their victory over the Lady Pioneers in their first meeting back on January 28th, an 86-82 victory in Philippi.
The second time around was much different as GSC harassed the A-B women in 38 turnovers, while firing up an unbelievable 104 shots. The Pioneers overcame very cold shooting to hold on to 4th place in the WVIAC with a 86-68 victory at last night.
With the loss the Lady Battlers drop to 7-18 Overall and 5-15 in WVIAC play.
A-B was led by Lauren Reed's 16 points and a double-double from Tori Charley of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Coach Allen's squad would hit on 23 of 61 field goals (37.7%) and 7 of 19 behind the arc.
The host Pioneers held a 62-59 advantage on the boards, including 41 offensive rebounds.
Alderson-Broaddus returns to action this Thursday as they play host to Wheeling Jesuit. Last home game of the regular season is always fan appreciation night, where all fans will get in free. Tip off is at 5:15.

Wesleyan, which is 8-2 at home this season, has won six of their past seven contests. Lydia Bridenbaugh's 18.1 points per game paces the Bobcats. Senior center Angela Tassari is second in the WVIAC with 52 blocked shots.
Concord, which hopes to become the eighth WVIAC women's basketball squad to knock off the league leader over the past five-plus weeks, has gotten outstanding play from sophomore guard Camisha Alexander in recent games. The Beckley sophomore is averaging 25.4 points per contest during CU's past five games, including a career-best 41-point explosion in Monday's wild 111-106 setback to Glenville State.
Old rivals battle in the Northern Panhandle as Fairmont State (15-7, 12-5) battles West Liberty (14-8, 10-7). Both teams look to shake off disappointing Monday losses. FSU fell 83-77 to Wheeling Jesuit, while WL dropped a 77-73 decision at Seton Hill. Fairmont State won the first meeting 73-66 as the Falcon defense forced 26 turnovers.
Revenge-minded Seton Hill (17-6, 13-5) brings the WVIAC's longest win streak at eight games to Wheeling Jesuit (10-12, 9-8). The Cardinals hit 10 of 20 three-pointers to knock off SHU 83-74 in the initial contest. Kourtney Booth poured in a game-high 27 points to lead WJU.
Davis & Elkins (13-10, 9-9) has impressive recent triumphs over West Liberty and Charleston and now has their sights set on an upper division finish. West Virginia State (15-9, 11-8) is D&E's next obstacle. WVSU owned the backboards to a 52-39 tune during their 77-68 win against the Senators on November 29.
The remainder of the Thursday evening platter of games includes: Charleston (15-7, 12-5) at Alderson-Broaddus (7-15, 5-12), Bluefield State (1-22, 1-17) at Glenville State (13-8, 11-6), Pitt Johnstown (14-9, 11-7) at Salem International (0-22, 0-17), and Shepherd (13-8, 12-5) at Ohio Valley (4-18, 2-15).

Lady Battlers Use Big Lead to Get Past Bluefield State
Box Score | Season To Date Stats
Fairmont State's Strong First Half To Much For Lady Battlers
The Lady Falcons of Fairmont State got off to a vicious first half start and never looked back as A-B dropped a 48-77 decision Monday night at Rex Pyles Arena.
Fairmont State scored the opening bucket before Freshman Amanda Peoples connected on a Battler three to give them their first and last lead of the game at the 19:08 mark. Than Fairmont State took the game over and simply would pull this one out of reach from A-B as they would push their lead up to as many as 26.
The score would be 43-16 as Fairmont shot 54 percent from the field and their defense forced 16 first half A-B turnovers. The Lady Battlers connected on only seven field goals for 24 percent in the opening twenty minutes of action as it was simply just not their night.
The second half would be a more even battle as the Lady Battlers shot 11-15 from the line and they raised their shooting percentage to 33 percent but Fairmont still managed to outscore them by three to make the final score 77-48.
A-B was led in scoring by senior Tori Charley as she finished with nine. The Lady Falcons, who improved to 13-6 overall and 10-4 in the WVIAC, were led in scoring by Kaitlin Snyder with 18. Fairmont would put three players in double digit scoring as Lauren Streicher tallied 14 and Ashley Vavrak scored 12.
The Lady Battlers with the loss drop to 6-13 overall and 4-10 in the WVIAC.

Lady Battlers Can't Overcome Lady Bobcats of Wesleyan
The Alderson-Broaddus Lady Battlers couldn't overcome a slow shooting night Monday evening as they dropped a 69-44 decision on the road at West Virginia Wesleyan.
Although shots were not falling A-B kept themselves in the game in the first half with their respected defensive pressure. Wesleyan would only connect on more field goal in the opening stanza than the Lady
Battlers as A-B went to the locker room down by a very manageable score of 34-21.
A-B shot 34 percent to Wesleyan's 48 percent in the first half. It was a well slow half at the foul line for both squads as A-B failed to get to the line and the Lady Bobcats connected on 3-4 from the charity stripe.
The second half, unfortunately for A-B, would go much like the first. The Lady Battlers connected on only 6-28 from the floor in the second half for 26 percent shooting. Wesleyan would counter this with 63 percent on 15-26 shooting. This would be the difference as Wesleyan took over the WVIAC lead with the win over A-B.
The lone A-B player to reach double figures was Freshman Ashley Prince, who has embraced a starting role as of late and has showed continuous improvement over the season, tallied 11 in this one. Leading scorer Tori Charley was held to just two points but would the lead team in rebounding as pulled down nine.
Lydia Bridenbaugh would lead all scorers as scored an impressive 22 points and Jamie Kaufman would score 11 as they were the lone two Bobcats in double digits. Wesleyan improved to 11-7 overall and 9-4 in conference as A-B dropped to 6-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
A-B will make the trip to West Lib on Thursday as tipoff is scheduled at 5:15. The game will be available on WQAB 91.3FM and webstreaming will also be available at www.ab.edu/gameday.

Head coach Josh Allen always knew what his team was capable of this year and in recent action against Glenville State those in attendance also saw it as the Lady Battlers took down conference foe Glenville State 88-82.
The first half would go both ways as A-B did all they could in slowing down a Glenville offense that averages nearly 90 possessions a game. Glenville jumped out to a early lead as they went up by as many as 10 at the 16:36 mark. However the Lady Battlers used a great press breaking offense which gave them a lot of open looks and on more times than not they connected as it led them back into the game.
A-B would get their first lead of the half late and they pushed it up to as many as seven with only 20 seconds left but Glenville would close on a explosive 8-0 run to give them the lead back at the half 45-44.
Both Amanda Peoples and Tori Charley led the Lady Battlers in scoring with ten a piece in the opening half. Donita Adams, the Lady Pioneers leading scorer, had 14 at intermission to lead all scorers. A-B shot a blistering 57 percent from the floor to Glenville's 40. However A-B could only connect on 1-11 from deep as Glenville hit five treys.
The second half would begin in Glenville's favor and they would hold the lead for a majority of the half as they had a balanced attack from Adams, Autumn Davis, and post player Kristen Golden to maintain their lead. It would not be enough though to hold off a determined Lady Battlers team that was thirsty for a huge and much needed conference win.
Peoples and Charley would continue to have an impact on the game but Lauren Reed would have 13 second half points to give A-B the lead back late. Reed would go on and hit a crucial three with less than a second on the shot clock in the closing minutes to give A-B a two possession lead at four.
The Lady Battlers would hold off Glenville by a final score of 88-82, giving A-B consecutive victories after dropping their previous four. It boosted their record to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in conference. Glenville who came into the game ranked in the top five of conference standings dropped to 9-6 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
A-B would be led scoring by People as she had 19 points but it was Charley who earned a double double as she finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Reed finished with 13 and Amanda Harris tallied 10 points and had eight assists as she is still top ten in the nation in assists per game.
The Lady Battlers return to action Saturday as they take on the conference leading Lady Falcons of Fairmont State. Tipoff is at 5:15 pm at Rex Pyles Arena and you can tune in and watch the game with the WQAB 91.3FM broadcast at this website as Tony Lane and Nick Dials will be courtside brigning you the action.

PRINCETON, W.Va.)---The unsettled WVIAC women's basketball race figures to take more twists and turns with four key showdowns on Thursday night's schedule.
Shepherd (9-6, 8-2) takes their newly-minted first place status in the league standings to Seton Hill (9-6, 5-5). Second place Fairmont State (11-4, 8-2) will be tested by visiting Pitt Johnstown (9-6, 6-4). Charleston (11-5, 8-3) travels to slumping Concord (10-6, 7-4) and West Virginia Wesleyan (8-7, 6-4) heads to Davis & Elkins (9-6, 5-5) in a neighborhood rivalry.
Shepherd has taken six straight after racing past Glenville State 116-94 on Saturday. The balanced Ram attack is paced by Camille Wilmer's 14.2 points per game. Carrie Saunders chips in 12.8 points per outing. SU is outrebounding opponents by over ten boards per game.
Seton Hill has dropped five of six contests since an 8-1 start. Katie Lintner tops the Griffin stat chart with 14.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Jordan Burkes adds 10.7 points per game. The Griffins are only 3-4 on their home court in 2009-10.
Charleston and Concord represent teams that are heading in different directions. Visiting Charleston has taken nine of ten, while injury-riddled Concord is 4-6 in the second semester.
UC, which is ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, sees all five starters average double figures in points. Lindsey Kentner racks up 17.2 points per game, while Kaitlyn Arick adds 14.1. Center Tarenna Dixon contributes a double-double of 13.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. The Golden Eagles are 9-1 at Eddie King Gymnasium, but only 1-4 in true road contests.
Concord has ranked among the nation's top defensive field goal units all season, allowing foes to only make 34.1 percent of their shots from the field. However, turnovers have been an achilles heel for the Lady Lions. CU is averaging over 18 miscues per night and opponents have attempted 92 more field goal attempts than the Lady Lions in 2009-10. Sisters Sierra (14.1 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Jolysa (13.4 ppg, 9.3 rpg) Brown lead Concord in scoring.
Fairmont State, winners of three straight after edging Davis & Elkins 75-69 in overtime on Saturday, has another tough contest on tap when Pitt Johnstown comes to Joe Retton Arena. FSU's sticky defense is forcing nearly 25 turnovers per contest and is limiting foes to 58.6 points per game. Senior guard Ashley Vavrek paces the Falcon attack with 19.4 points per game.
Pitt Johnstown also ranks among the WVIAC's best on defense, holding opponents to 61.7 points per contest. The Lady Cats get 14.6 points and 5.2 rebounds from guard Sheena Aden. Andrea Dalton adds 13.6 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game.
Davis & Elkins looks to make some noise in a rivalry dominated in recent years by West Virginia Wesleyan. WVWC has won the last eight in the series since D&E claimed a 78-71 home victory on January 16, 2006.
This season's D&E squad is led by the guard trio of Shalisa Hill (14.6 ppg), Lindsay Holliday (11.3 ppg), and Teonna Jewell (10.1 ppg). Hill also leads the Senators in rebounding (5.6 rpg), assists (3.7 apg), and steals (3.6 spg).
Wesleyan has fashioned an 8-7 mark against one of the toughest schedules in Division II. 13 of the Bobcats' 15 opponents own winning records to date. Lydia Bridenbaugh pours in 18.5 points per game to top WVWC. Danae Hill adds 13.1 points per night.
West Liberty (10-5, 6-4), the fourth-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, treks down I-77 to Ohio Valley (4-10, 2-8). Run-and-gun Glenville State (9-5, 7-3) is ranked sixth in the initial regional rankings. The Lady Pioneers put that spot on the line at Alderson-Broaddus (5-10, 3-7).
The night's schedule is rounded out by Wheeling Jesuit (6-9, 5-5) at Salem International (0-15, 0-10) and Bluefield State (1-16, 1-11) at West Virginia State (10-7, 6-6).

Concord and West Virginia State are playing a makeup game of a contest that was snowed out last month. WVSU used a late rush to bounce Ohio Valley 74-52 on Saturday, while Concord dropped a heartbreaking 67-65 decision at West Liberty.
State has won three of four and is led in scoring by Marshall transfer Alixandria Barnette's 16.7 points per game. Tonesha Members (11.7 ppg) and Danielle Davis (11.6 ppg) each score in double figures for the Jackets.

The only other Monday night league affair pits Alderson-Broaddus (4-10, 2-7) versus homestanding Bluefield State (1-15, 1-10). Non-conference contests see Washington Adventist (0-16) visiting Davis & Elkins (8-6) and Ohio Valley (4-9) takes a trip to Urbana (11-8).
The lone Tuesday contest should be a good one as Seton Hill (9-5) hosts a solid Lake Erie (14-8) squad. Lake Erie owns a six-game win streak and has victories this season versus Grand Valley State, Fairmont State, and Concord.

Peoples' Double Double Not Enough As A-B Falls to Seton Hill
It was a tale of two halfs for the Lady Battlers at Seton Hill Saturday as their recent skid continued.
Seton Hill started out the game on a 13-4 run as it was capped by on a layup by Jill Emberg at the 14:29 mark. A-B's early struggles would stay with them the rest of the half as the Lady Grif's would extend their lead up to as many as 18 with just under a minute left in the first stanza.
However the half would end on a positive note for A-B as Britni Shriver stole the ball with five seconds left and Tori Charley would hit a jumper in the closing seconds to make the score at half 45-29.
The Lady Battlers shot 38 percent from the field in the first half compared to the blistering 60 percent for Seton Hill.
In the second half of play Seton Hill would get their largest lead of the game at 18:12 as they went up by 19. Than things would slowly start turning for A-B's offense as they went on a explosive 10-0 run over the next two minutes to make the score, a much more manageable one at 50-41. The beginning and end of the run would be a Amanda Peoples three pointer as she would end the game with a double a double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
A-B would get the Seton Hill's lead down to as few as six with 8:19 left on a layup by Senior Lauren Reed. But A-B then went cold on the offensive end as they did not score again over a near four minute span until Ashley Prince split a pair of free throws. The Lady Battlers would connect on a field goal until Senior Tori Charley connected on a layup with 1:39 left. Reed would score off a Charley steal with 1:01 on the clock to cut the lead of Seton Hill down to 66-60.
Seton Hill would split a pair of free throws off their ensueing possession and gave A-B the ball back with just over thirty seconds left. A-B than turned the ball over back to Seton Hill off their next possession and that spoiled the comeback bid for the Lady Battlers as Seton Hill pushed the lead back out to nine. The final in this hard fought game would end at 72-63.
Charley had a solid effort for A-B as she poured in 18 points and pulled down six rebounds. Seton Hill was led in scoring by Emberg as she scored a game high 23 and pulled down a team high seven boards.
A-B drops to 2-7 in conference play and 4-10 overall. The Lady Grif's improved to 9-5 overall and 5-5 overall. On Monday A-B makes the long trek down to Bluefield State. The game will be on 91.3FM WQAB and online at www.ab.edu/gameday
