AB Women's Soccer Beats Rio Grande, Falls to Seton Hill
The Alderson-Broaddus women’s soccer team split a pair of contests last week as they kicked off a three-game road trip. On September 30, the Lady Battlers used a late-game goal to get past the University of Rio Grande 2-1. Four days later, A-B would have to battle through over 100 minutes of action before dropping a 1-0 decision to conference foe, Seton Hill University.
The contest against Rio Grande saw both teams fail to find the back of the net during the first half of play. However, in the 67th minute, A-B’s Gwen Brand headed on a pass to Amber Kling, who then scored to give the Lady Battlers the lead. Kasie Shoemaker also accounted for an assist on the play. In the 80th minute, the Red Storm evened the contest when Jessica Preston took a Mallarie Lewis pass and found the upper corner. Just two minutes later, though, Brooke Logston would prevent the game from going into overtime when she scored on a rebound off of a Jenny Perry shot.
The Lady Battlers dominated in every aspect of the game, taking 19 shots compared to five by the Red Storm. A-B also held a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Keeper Kate Laird had three saves, while her counterpart Kaitlyn Schultz recorded ten.
Against the Griffins, the Lady Battlers looked to pick up their second conference win. The contest would prove to be a defensive battle as neither team would manage to score during regulation. The scoreboard would still read 0-0 after an additional period, which would force a decisive second overtime. Just over two minutes in, Seton Hill’s Mackiesh Taylor would score an unassisted goal to give the Griffins the sudden death victory.
A-B had a 17-12 advantage in shots, while Seton Hill had three corner kicks compared to the Lady Battlers’ one. Laird had 7 saves while Jenna Forsano had 11 for the Griffins.
The Lady Battlers will have an extensive home-stand, as they host five contests in eleven days. The first is a Homecoming match up against Carlow University on Saturday, October 10 at noon. Salem International University and Bluefield State College will then come to Philippi on October 12, and October 14, respectively. Both WVIAC tilts are scheduled for 3 PM kickoffs.

(Philippi, WV) --- The Lady Battlers of Alderson-Broaddus continued in the right direction in their second ever season as they knocked off the University of Charleston 2-1 in recent home action. This was the first conference victory for A-B in conference play and they improved to 3-2-1 overall. In the 20th minute Brooke Hunsaker launched a shot from 22 yards out that hit the top shelf left corner to give A-B the early 1-0 lead. Gwen Brand and Taylor Bryant were credited with the assists. The lead held up until the 40th minute when Holli Dalton of UC netted a pass from Sharon Lapinsky to even things up at 1-1 going into the half. This was the only first half goal given up by the Lady Battlers on the season. It didn’t take A-B long in the second half to retake the lead as Taylor Bryant scored her first goal of the season to give the lead back, just four minutes and 10 seconds in. The Lady Battlers’ defense held strong for the duration of the match, as they wouldn’t allow a single shot on goal in the 2nd Half. Kate Laird would pick up the victory in between the pipes for A-B. Alderson-Broaddus peppered UC goalie Whitney Sharp, outshooting the Lady Golden Eagles 17-5. The Lady Battlers also held the advantage on shots on goal 6-1. The next game for A-B will come in a road trip to Rio Grande on September 30. A-B defeated Rio Grande 2-1 in exhibition play earlier in the season.
The women’s soccer program at A-B has cracked the top 100 in several prominent categories in the nation in only their second full season as a program.
Their highest team ranking comes in shutout percentages as they are currently ranked a respective 26. In save percentage the Lady Battlers are sitting at 30 in the nation and also are ranked 46 in goals against and finally are ranked 53 in scoring offense.
Kate Laird has had an impressive freshman campaign as goalkeeper and has garnished a WVIAC player of the week award. Also she is ranked 29 in the nation in save percentage and 79 in goals against average. Fellow freshman Kasie Shoemaker is ranked 59 in goals per game and 72 in points per game.
Currently the Lady Battlers are 3-2-1 in the early goings of their season and continue to take steps forward in building a WVIAC top competitor.

The Lady Battlers (1-1, 0-1) would strike first as Gwen Brand (Fr., Kingwood, WV) would chip the CU Goalie from 30 yards out to gain the 1-0 lead just 7 minutes in. Both teams would have a couple of good scoring chances in the opening half, but A-B would take the 1-0 lead into the break.
