Eargle Named WVIAC Player of the Year

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Monday, March 1, 2010

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---Versatile Alderson-Broaddus senior Terrell Eargle has been selected as the 2009-10 WVIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year by a vote of league coaches.  Fairmont State rookie Isaac Thornton is the pick as the Freshman of the Year, while West Liberty's Jim Crutchfield is the Coach of the Year after leading the Toppers to the league regular season title.

Eargle (6-4, Sr., G) helped an inexperienced Alderson-Broaddus squad to a 22-5 regular season mark with his across the board contributions.  The Youngstown, Ohio native leads the WVIAC in rebounding (10.9) and steals (3.3), while ranking among the league's leaders in scoring (14.7, 19th) and assists (4.2, 7th).  His 14 double-doubles also top the WVIAC.  A near-quadruple double of 16 points, 20 rebounds, 8 assists, and 8 steals during a January win against Davis & Elkins ranks among the top individual efforts in Division II during 2009-10.  The four-year starter has been a part of 99 victories against only 24 defeats during his Battler career.

Thornton (6-3, Fr., G) made an immediate impact for a Fairmont State squad that enters the post-season with a 21-6 record by leading all WVIAC freshmen with 15.1 points per game.  The former Martinsburg HS standout also contributed 5.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the Falcons.

Crutchfield earns his second WVIAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year award (2005, 2010) after leading West Liberty to their first league championship since 1961 and a 25-1 overall record.  The sixth-season head coach owns a sparkling 138-37 mark at the WLU helm and has won at least 20 games in each of those campaigns.  This season's Toppers ended the regular season with a 20-game win streak, average 104.0 points per game, and currently own the top spot in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings.  The Clarksburg, WV native also won eight WVIAC Tennis Coach of the Year awards (3-men, 5-women) during a stint as WL's head coach in that sport.

The nine-player All-WVIAC first team does not feature any repeat selections from last season's senior-dominated squad.  Eargle, West Virginia State's Darren Jones, West Liberty's Corey Pelle, and Davis & Elkins' Tim Turner move up from the 2008-09 All-WVIAC second team.  Eargle was a first team All-WVIAC honoree following the 2007-08 season as a sophomore.

The remainder of the guard-oriented 2009-10 All-WVIAC first team consists of Jamar Board (Alderson-Broaddus), Steve Custis (Fairmont State), Mike Mathey (West Liberty), Josh Miller (WV State), and Bahaadar Russell (Charleston).
