Explosive Second Half Leads to A-B Victory Over UDC

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Tuesday, January 5, 2010

The Battlers took care of business for the fourth consecutive game and this time it was in dominant fashion. A-B made the drive to The University of District of Columbia for a rematch from earlier in the season. The Battlers won the first match earlier in the season at Rex Pyles Arena by the score of . This game would not be as close.
The Firebirds were without Nigel Munson who dropped 33 against the Battlers in the first matchup but they had last years leading score Tim Ellison back in the line up. Ellison would not be enough for UDC.
Alderson-Broaddus never trailed for the second consecutive game as they started the game out on a 6-0 run and never gave the lead up. The Battlers biggest lead came in the first half with thirteen minutes left when Junior Mark Summerfield hit his third three of the half on just as many attempts to give A-B a 18-4 advantage. UDC would go on a run at the end of the half led by Kennith James and Ellison and they went into half trailing the Battlers by a score of 34-27.
It would not be nearly as close in the second half as the Battlers got major contributions from Terrell Eargle, Junior Carl Buck, and Sophomore Jamar Board. Buck and Eargle hooked up on several occasions as Buck exploded with nine points and seven assists. Board who led all scorers with 22 points scored 15 of them in the second half. Eargle had a double-double at halftime and showed to many why he was named WVIAC conference player of the week. He would end up with yet another impressive stat line as he had 14 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists, and two steals.
A-B held the Firebirds to just 12 second half points as they outscored UDC by 27 points. The Firebirds were held to just 28 percent shooting in the second half compared to the 64 percent posted by the Battlers. The final score ended up heavily in A-B's favor 80-46 as the Battlers improved their record to 4-2 on the season and picked up yet another Atlantic Region win. A-B will look to continue their winning ways on the road against Cheyney University in Philadelphia, PA in another Atlantic Region matchup. Read more on this article...

Men's Basketball Gears Up For East Coast Swing

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on Friday, January 1, 2010

The Battlers will try to continue their winning ways in the new year as they prepare for two big regional games against the University of District of Columbia and Cheyney University.
January 4 has the Battlers slated against the Firebirds of UDC. UDC traveled to Philippi earlier in the season and the Battlers picked up their second win of the season 85-73. Eargle paced the Battlers with 28 points, nine rebounds, six steals, and five assists.
However Eargle was not the top scorer for the game as UDC's Nigel Munson lit up the scoreboard with 33 points on 12-19 shooting from the floor including 4-6 from deep. The Firebirds have recently picked up their first win of the season with a very challenging schedule and will come into the game with a record of 1-11.
On January 6 A-B will travel to Philadelphia to the campus of Cheyney University in their first regular season meeting during Coach Zimmerman's tenure. This is not the first time Zimmerman has faced the Wolves. Two years ago the Battlers knocked Cheyney out of the NCAA tournament in the first round off Jordan Morrison's 19 points off the bence.
The Wolves will come into the game with a record of 5-2. What is more impressive about the 5-2 start is that all the games have3 come on the road due to their recent renovation of the gym floor. A-B will be the first home game for the Wolves. Read more on this article...

A-B Takes Down Edinboro With 3-point Display

Posted by CoachPMcGinnis on

The Battlers men's basketball squad reigned supreme in what was their strongest effort of the season against regional foe Edinboro. A-B made the four hour trek up north along I-79 but it was well worth it as they had control of the game from the opening minutes.
Sophomore Jamar Board who has had the difficult job of filling in the shoes of departed Sam Liggins, made it look easy and early as he single handedly went on a 9-0run to start out the game with three consecutive treys. The early run didn't stop there as teammates Mark Summerfield and Freshman Roy Brown had two more threes to make it a 18-3 commanding lead with still 15:15 left in the first half.
The Battlers never gave up the lead but had to survive a couple runs from a very talented Edinboro team. After Eargle made a layup after the Fighting Scots timeout to make it 20-3 Junior Byron Knight started to heat up off the bench. He scored six straight points to cut the lead 21-15 but just as Edinboro got within striking range Board answered with yet another three to push the lead back to 24-15. Alderson-Broaddus pushed the lead back into double digits but just as the first half was winding down Edinboro finished on a strong note and brought it back into single digits with the score being 37-28 at the break.
The second half was in similar fashion as the Battlers stretched the lead back up to double digits early and had an answer to every Edinboro threat. A-B's largest lead of the night came with nine minutes left in the contest as they were well ahead by a score of 56-33. Edinboro would battle back in the final minutes but it would not be enough as the final score was a misleading 81-72.
The starting five for A-B did nearly all the scoring as the only bench points came in the first half on a Mile Ivanic layup. The Battlers were led in scoring by both Board and Senior Terell Eargle with 23 each. Roy Brown came into the game averaging five points per game but Brown poured in a career high 21 points in his third career start. Eargle did more than just score as his impressive streak four plus steals per game continued as he had five more. He also had five assists nine rebounds and three blocks.
The Battlers as a team shot a blistering 53 percent from the three point line in the first half on 7-13 shooting. The second half resulted with A-B going 2-6 from deep and gave them a final percentage of 47 for the game.
Edinboro was led in scoring by Knight as he ended up with 23 points. Senior Justin Moore was the only other Edinboro player to reach double figures as he had 14. Edinboro dropped to 5-3 on the season while the Battlers improved to 3-2 and got over the .500 mark for the first time this season. Read more on this article...
