Philippi, WV --- While it wasn't the prettiest game the Alderson-Broaddus Men's Basketball team has played this season, it was still an effective win, as the Battlers move on to the Quarterfinals of the WVIAC Tournament with a 87-72 win over the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley. Jamar Board led the way with a team high 26 points, while Carl Buck added 25 as A-B improve to 23-5 Overall and advance to take on #11 Seed WV Wesleyan on Thursday.
Terrell Eargle, the WVIAC Player of the Year, helped out with 12 points and 14 rebounds as he recorded his 15th double-double in his final game at the Rex Pyles Arena. Garrett Putnam chipped in 13 points and 8 rebounds.
Sean Whiting had a game high 27 points for Ohio Valley as their season finished with a record of 6-22.
Despite the poor showing this season, the Scots were not in the mood to make this game easy by an stretch. Even though A-B held the lead for the final 29 minutes, Ohio Valley refuse to let this game get out of hand, and they had an answer to keep the game within in stricking distant.
The Battlers would grab the lead for good at the 9:14 mark on a Putnam Jumper and then stretch it to a seven point margin after back to back buckets by Board. The Scots answered right back with an 8-5 spurt to cut the deficit to four going into the locker room, 34-30.
After A-B opened the 2nd half with a 5-0 spurt, Ohio Valley answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 39-37 with 16:33 remaining.
Both teams would trade a pair of buckets before the Battlers reeled off an 14-2 run to widen the lead out to 14 at 58-44 with 11:21 left to go in the contest.
Again, Ohio Valley had a counter for the A-B run as they scored eight straight points to cut the lead to six, however after two Board free throws and layups by Buck and Putnam the lead reached double digits and would stay that way as Alderson-Broaddus cruised to the finish.
A-B shot 43% from the field and 35% from behind the arc for the game. The WVIAC's top rebounding team held a 47-37 margin on the boards over the visiting Scots.
The foul plaque contest saw a combined 83 free throws attempted, 43 for A-B and 40 for OVU. The Battlers connected on 32 of those 43 attempts (74.4%) while Ohio Valley made just 22 of 40 (55%).
With the win Alderson-Broaddus will now take on WV Wesleyan Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center. A-B already owns a pair of 12 point victories over the Bobcats this season. Tip off thursday will be at 1:00 PM.

Eargle (6-4, Sr., G) helped an inexperienced Alderson-Broaddus squad to a 22-5 regular season mark with his across the board contributions. The Youngstown, Ohio native leads the WVIAC in rebounding (10.9) and steals (3.3), while ranking among the league's leaders in scoring (14.7, 19th) and assists (4.2, 7th). His 14 double-doubles also top the WVIAC. A near-quadruple double of 16 points, 20 rebounds, 8 assists, and 8 steals during a January win against Davis & Elkins ranks among the top individual efforts in Division II during 2009-10. The four-year starter has been a part of 99 victories against only 24 defeats during his Battler career.
Thornton (6-3, Fr., G) made an immediate impact for a Fairmont State squad that enters the post-season with a 21-6 record by leading all WVIAC freshmen with 15.1 points per game. The former Martinsburg HS standout also contributed 5.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the Falcons.
Crutchfield earns his second WVIAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year award (2005, 2010) after leading West Liberty to their first league championship since 1961 and a 25-1 overall record. The sixth-season head coach owns a sparkling 138-37 mark at the WLU helm and has won at least 20 games in each of those campaigns. This season's Toppers ended the regular season with a 20-game win streak, average 104.0 points per game, and currently own the top spot in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings. The Clarksburg, WV native also won eight WVIAC Tennis Coach of the Year awards (3-men, 5-women) during a stint as WL's head coach in that sport.
The nine-player All-WVIAC first team does not feature any repeat selections from last season's senior-dominated squad. Eargle, West Virginia State's Darren Jones, West Liberty's Corey Pelle, and Davis & Elkins' Tim Turner move up from the 2008-09 All-WVIAC second team. Eargle was a first team All-WVIAC honoree following the 2007-08 season as a sophomore.
The remainder of the guard-oriented 2009-10 All-WVIAC first team consists of Jamar Board (Alderson-Broaddus), Steve Custis (Fairmont State), Mike Mathey (West Liberty), Josh Miller (WV State), and Bahaadar Russell (Charleston).

Tori Charley Named Honorable Mention All - WVIAC
(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---Glenville State guard Donita Adams, the WVIAC's leading scorer at 22.4 points per game, has been named as the league's 2009-10 Player of the Year by a vote of conference coaches. Davis & Elkins' Shalisa Hill takes Freshman of the Year accolades, while West Virginia Wesleyan's Steve Tierney rounds out the top awards as the WVIAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to the conference's regular season crown.
Adams played a key role as Glenville State remained in contention for the WVIAC regular season title until the final day. The Lady Pioneers finished fourth in the WVIAC with a 15-7 league mark and posted a 17-9 overall record after being forecast to finish 12th in the annual coaches' pre-season poll.
The 5-7 senior guard responded in a big way to first-year head coach Bunky Harkleroad's up-tempo attack by producing over a point per minute. Adams, who currently ranks second nationally in scoring, racked up her impressive totals in only 21.3 minutes per outing. The Germantown, Maryland native contributed four games with 30 or more points in 2009-10 and went over the 20-point mark in 14 other contests. She also leads the WVIAC in free throw percentage (.831) and made free throws (147), while rating eighth in steals (2.1) and 21st in rebounds (6.0).
Hill led Davis & Elkins to the school's most victories since the 2000-01 Senators finished 15-13. The Carney's Point, New Jersey native paced D&E in scoring (14.4), rebounding (5.7), assists (3.6), and steals (3.1). Hill saved some of her top efforts for victories against some of the WVIAC's top squads. She had 18 points and 8 rebounds in an 81-73 win over West Liberty on February 8 and accounted for 22 points and 6 assists as D&E prevailed for the first time ever at Charleston on February 15.
Tierney edged Seton Hill's Ferne Labati, Glenville State's Bunky Harkleroad, and Davis & Elkins' Jason Asbell in a tight finish for WVIAC Coach of the Year honors. The 1987 Sam Houston State graduate owns a 110-89 record in his seventh season at the Wesleyan helm. This season's Bobcats were only predicted to finish sixth in the WVIAC race after the loss of standout forward Sarah Van Horn, but they provided the school's first league regular season title and a 19-8 overall record. A victory in Wednesday's WVIAC Tournament quarterfinals would give WVWC back-to-back 20-win seasons after the 2008-09 'Cats finished at 20-10.
Fairmont State's Ashley Vavrek, Seton Hill's Katie Lintner, and West Liberty's Tori Hansen are repeat selections on this season's first team All-WVIAC squad. Pitt Johnstown's Sheena Aden and Seton Hill's Jordan Burkes move up from the 2008-09 all-conference second team. Adams, Alixandria Barnette (WV State), Lydia Bridenbaugh (WV Wesleyan), and Lindsey Kentner (Charleston) comprise the remainder of the nine-player All-WVIAC first team for 2009-10.

The Battlers wrapped up yet another 20 plus win regular season with a 76-62 win over nearby foe Davis & Elkins College. With the win the Battlers also clinched the #3 seed in the upcoming WVIAC tournament, which would delay a possible rematch with the number one team in the region West Liberty until the championship game.
The first half would be controlled by the Battlers as they would outscore the Senators by a 43-27 margin. The Battlers used defensive pressure to hold D & E to just 32 percent shooting from the floor to A-B's 48 percent. A-B also went wild in the first half as they connected on 8-16 from deep to help open up the game.
The second half would be a much more even affair as the Battlers cooled down from deep and went 3-10 beyond the arc in the second twenty minutes of play. The Senators would outscore the Battlers by four in the half which brought the final score to 76-62.
Terrel Eargle played a less than average 25 minutes but made the most of it as he scored 13 points and pulled down an impressive 17 rebounds on just another average night for the lone senior. Jamar Board the sophomore from Capital Heights, Maryland would lead all scorers with 26 points. The Battlers, with the win, improve to 22-5 overall and also improved their chances of getting an at large bid into the NCAA national tournament if they can't win the automatic bid as tournament champion.
Alderson-Broaddus will host the #14 seed Ohio Valley at Rex Pyles Arena March 2nd. Ohio Valley has already made the trek to Philippi in their only meeting this season which resulted in a 92-64 lopsided Battler victory.

The Lady Battlers would have loved to go into the WVIAC tournament on a winning note but unfortunately for A-B the Lady Senators of Davis & Elkins College got in their way in a close 65-63 D&E victory.
It was a close game from the opening tipoff to the final whistle. It was so close that both teams went an identical 13-25 from the floor for 52 percent. The only difference in the first half in scoring was that the Lady Senators connected on more three pointer and one more free throw attempt as they held a slim 36-34 advantage at intermission.
The second half would result in both teams scoring 29 points as the Lady Battlers could never get the upper hand even after holding D&E to just 33 percent in the second half but the Lady Senators connected on 11 free throws to A-B's four to make the final score a 65-63 Lady Senator victory.
Alderson-Broaddus also held a very dominant hand in the rebounding department by a final margin of 45-27 lead by Freshman Amanda Peoples' 14. The Lady Battlers were paced in scoring by seniors Lauren Reed with 20 and Amanda Harris with 18. Harris lead the Battlers with eight assists on the evening who will open their conference tournament at Glenville State.
The last meeting between the two teams was a thriller as the Lady Battlers walked out of Rex Pyles Arena with the 88-82 upset victory.

The Pioneers made things interesting the 2nd half as they used a 10-0 run to cut a 12 point deficit down to 2 points with 10:49 remaining. However, A-B then countered with a 9-2 run to put things out of reach.
